SAGAN, Carl; DRUYAN, Ann: Murmurs of Earth Signed First Printing

A scarce SIGNED first edition of Murmurs of Earth, the definitive inside narrative of humanity's most ambitious message in a bottle to the cosmos, conceived and edited by Carl Sagan and his colleagues (Drake, Druyan, Ferris, Lomberg, and Linda Salzman) on the Voyager record committee. "[We are] a species endowed with hope and perseverance, at least a little intelligence, substantial generosity and a palpable zest to make contact with the cosmos."

Published in 1978 by Random House in richly illustrated quarto, the first edition documents, in authoritative detail, how Sagan's team designed the famous Golden Record affixed to the twin Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. For collectors, this edition captures the project at the very moment Voyager was leaving the solar system's shores, preserving the original visual program, typography, and photo sequences, which some later printings either altered or abridged.

"Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known," wrote Sharon Begley (Newsweek, 1977) in a featured article about Sagan, quintessentially encapsulating his philosophy of scientific optimism, curiosity, and the endless search for cosmic mysteries.

A Very Good copy with some minor blemishing along paper edges. Small circular "Autographed Copy" sticker from original bookseller. Save for Sagan's signature, no writings or markings of any kind. In a Very Good+ jacket with only minor edgewear and two small closed tears. Book #Bv3001. $1442.
